His roles include the films Pusher, Open Hearts, The Green Butchers, Adam’s Apples, After the Wedding, Casino Royale, The Three Musketeers, A Royal Affair, The Hunt, Doctor Strange, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Another Round, and Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, and the shows Rejseholdet and Hannibal.

Mads is the son of Bente Christiansen, a nurse, and Henning Mikkelsen, a bank teller and trade union official. His brother is actor Lars Mikkelsen. He is married to choreographer Hanne Jacobsen, with whom he has two children.
